<description><![CDATA[Body of Lies is an adult thriller with such a high narrative density that even a brief trip to the restroom may result in key plot points being lost. The film is the antithesis of a slick, superficial feature like Eagle Eye. It both demands and rewards thought. It engages the mind instead of punishing those who use it for reasoning. Body of Lies neither panders nor condescends. It involves current events and has a political viewpoint, but it overplays neither. And, while the movie is very much story-driven, it doesn't lose sight of the characters along the way. It's smart and complex in the same way that films like Syriana and The Departed are smart and complex. <br /><br />Ridley Scott isn't afraid to take risks and he has built up enough Hollywood credibility to allow him to make the film he wants. Body of Lies isn't going to find much favor among the teenage crowd but it is the kind of motion picture that older, more sophisticated viewers hunger for. Despite the convoluted nature of the storyline and the way events jump from one location to another, Body of Lies is consistently well paced and, as it moves past the 60 minute mark into its second hour, it begins to exhibit more of what we expect from a thriller: tension and suspense. <br /><br />Rather than attempting to dissect the plot in any detail, the best approach is to lay the groundwork. Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) are a CIA team. Ferris is the field guy; he has all the contacts and knows the layout. He can move with ease from Iraq to Jordan to Syria. He can tell that a nurse working in Amman is from Iran based on her accent. Hoffman is his desk-bound boss, who sits like a spider at the center of a web in Langley, watching Ferris from above via real-time satellite images. It's the ultimate Big Brother scenario. Ferris and Hoffman's latest operation has them going after an Osama Bin Laden clone, Al-Saleem (Alon Aboutboul). To do this, they must partner with the head of Jordan's Intelligence Agency, Hani (Mark Strong). But Hani is as smart and manipulative as any CIA director and Ferris finds himself trapped between orders from Hoffman and the Jordanian's single directive: Do not lie to me. <br /><br />Body of Lies crisscrosses the globe, with scenes taking place in no less than a half-dozen countries, including the United States, England, Holland, Iraq, Jordan, and Syria. While the globe-trotting may be James Bond-like, the activities of the spies are not. There's nothing suave or dignified in the ways these characters interact. The do not take their martinis shaken (not stirred) - they gulp down the vodka in one mouthful and get on with the job. For the most part, the tone is one of seriousness, but Scott allows for one scene of levity and a little light romance. Visually, the film is interesting in the way it uses satellite images to present a wider, bird's eye view of the action. <br /><br />The screenwriter is William Monahan (adapting from a novel by David Ignatius), who is developing a reputation as someone whose scripts are multifaceted and detailed. He took the basics of Infernal Affairs and fleshed them out for The Departed. And his original storyline for Kingdom of Heaven was far more thought-provoking than the neutered version that reached screens (as anyone who has seen the Director's Cut will testify). The screenplay for Body of Lies is in the same league. It's refreshing to watch a movie where the viewer is not always two steps ahead of the characters. <br /><br />In essence, the movie has a deceptively simple theme that is italicized by an opening quote by W.H. Auden: "Those to whom evil is done Do evil in return." It's about the slippery slope that exists when those with the best intentions begin to emulate the tactics of the enemy in order to defeat them. Body of Lies illustrates this in ways that are neither obvious nor expected. The most chilling thing about the film may be its verisimilitude. Where Eagle Eye exists only in the realm of science fiction, it's possible that things like those depicted in Body of Lies are happening now in the real world. Rarely has the question of whether the end justifies the means been brought to the fore in such a forceful and brutal manner. <br /><br />There is a scene late in the movie that will distress some viewers. Seen objectively, it's far less graphic than what one might expect from a horror movie. Scott does not dwell lovingly on the violence, but he makes it perfectly clear what's going on. So why is this so more unsettling than the routine eviscerations depicted in the Saws and Hostels? Because the characters in this film seem like real people, not fodder to feed a serial killer. Body of Lies takes the time to flesh out Ferris and Hoffman. The latter is depicted talking to his man-on-the-ground while spending time with his family. The latter is allowed to romance the nurse who treats him for rabies. <br /><br />I don't think either Leonardo DiCaprio or Russell Crowe will be in line for an acting nomination as a result of their work here. Although they give strong performances, there's nothing showy about them. These portrayals are straightforward and convincing; there's no mugging for the camera. Crowe exhibits his versatility by playing a sleazy, obnoxious man who pushes around people like chess pieces. DiCaprio builds upon his work in The Departed and Blood Diamond. They are ably assisted by Mark Strong, whose beguiling interpretation of Hani may be the best piece of acting the movie has to offer. He gives the impression of how Satan may have convinced Eve to partake in the Garden of Eden. <br /><br />Numerous recent movies have used the current, unstable geopolitical situation as a backdrop. Few have done it as effectively as Body of Lies, and almost none are as free of preaching. Scott acknowledges the gulf of moral ambiguity that exists for those working in the intelligence field, and pursues it to its natural conclusion. For those who care about there being more to a thriller than pointless car chases and over-edited fight sequences, Body of Lies offers a satisfying dose of truth. <br /><br /><br/><br/>17 Vote(s) ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Rendition. Vantage Point. The Kingdom. Many films have been made about the war on terror in recent years. Their directors, earnest and passionate, pop up on television and in newspaper interviews to talk about how the topic is so urgent, so important, with such great consequences for global security. Who could disagree? And yet, almost without exception, these sober and serious dramas have tanked at the box office. The public, it seems, would prefer to stay at home for Strictly Come Dancing.<br /><br />While sitting through Body of Lies, the new Ridley Scott film about, yes, the war on terror, my thoughts also started to drift. To John Sergeant, and to the idea of him, togged up in camouflage gear, armed with assault weapons, sprinting and dancing through the blazing streets of Basra in order to take out some maniacal insurgent. Silly perhaps, but no sillier than anything in this muddled and banal action thriller.<br /><br /><br />Leonardo DiCaprio plays Roger Ferris, a tough-nut CIA operative who moves through the Middle East sniffing out radical jihadists. His latest assignment, prompted by a devastating explosion in Manchester, England, is to hunt down a particularly fiendish terrorist called Al-Saleem (Alon Aboutboul) who, in order to increase his chances of staying hidden from the secret services, chooses not to take credit for the atrocities he has masterminded.<br /><br />Ferris, with only partially useful help from his boss Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) back in the States, but some very nifty data-robbing moves engineered by an eccentric hacker (Simon McBurney), establishes a fictitious terror cell which has consequences both bad (an innocent architect, whose identity is stolen, gets killed) and good (Al-Saleem emerges from the shadows).<br /><br />Adapted by William Monahan (The Departed) from a novel by David Ignatius, the story definitely has promise. It also poses an interesting question: of what use is the super-sophisticated, super-expensive surveillance and military hardware employed by the Americans if the men they're tracking decide to communicate face-to-face rather than through mobile phones or digital devices?<br /><br />The answer is meant to lie with the character of Ferris. He speaks Arabic fluently, has a respect for the societies and cultures in which he circulates that is not at all shared by Hoffman, and, in his growing affection for a half-Iranian nurse called Aisha (Golshifteh Farahani), seems on the brink of going native. Only he has the chops to penetrate Islamist groups at ground level.<br /><br />There's a problem, though: Ferris is impossible to take seriously. DiCaprio's Arabic accent is almost as shaky as his Afrikaner accent in Blood Diamond. Mostly, he talks in English. Or rather, he yells in English while he wanders through dusty bazaars wearing a Bluetooth. Wouldn't the locals be a mite suspicious? He's pasty-white and sports a beard that looks like the pelt of a diseased rodent: wouldn't bystanders be staring and sniggering at him?<br /><br />DiCaprio is no action hero. The scenes in which he chases various suspects through mazy back streets full of market stalls and washing lines seem half-baked compared with similar sequences in The Bourne Ultimatum. Make-up artist Sian Grigg works overtime daubing him with cuts and bruises - one close-up shows a nurse extracting collateral bone fragments that have punctured his arm - but he's more effective as a courter than as a combatant.<br /><br />The semi-romantic interludes when he's trying to disarm Aisha's sister offer welcome relief from the general atmosphere of gung-ho huffing and puffing; they're also a reminder of the charm and gallantry that brought him superstar status in the first place.<br /><br />No film starring Russell Crowe (except for A Beautiful Mind) is ever going to be entirely worthless. But, for the most part, he phones in his performance here. Literally: having, for reasons that are unclear, piled on 50 pounds for this role, his character spends nearly all his time at the CIA's headquarters in Langley, Virginia, taking his kids to school and pottering about at home. We're denied the pleasure of seeing him jockey and joust, man-to-man, with Ferris.<br /><br />Body of Lies - such an awful title; so redolent of a straight-to-video porno - is, after Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven, the third in Scott's recent trilogy of films dramatising the conflict between the West and countries in the Middle East and in Africa. Any serious points he had to make about those relationships are lost amid the shoot-outs, explosions and roaring-helicopter chase scenes.<br /><br />Scott, at heart, is a pyrotechnician rather than a political philosopher. Sometimes, during the scenes when he shows graphic acts of torture, he seems like a two-penny shock merchant, too.<br /><br />Mark Strong stands out for the understated cruelty and sensuality with which he invests his Jordanian intelligence chief Hani Salaam. Farahani, too, shines in what is a very limited role. But they can't save a film that, however worthy its intentions may once have been, soon degenerates into very ordinary and unilluminating fare.<br/><br/>17 Vote(s) ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Overly familiar material and turgid pacing do in "Body of Lies," yet another self-important cinematic entry dappling in the current affairs of the Middle East and their foreign relations with America. Director Ridley Scott continues his losing streak here (for my money, he hasn't made a good film since 2001's "Black Hawk Down"), displaying a rote, by-the-numbers filmmaking sensibility that his more creative brother, Tony Scott (2006's "Déjà Vu," 2005's "Domino"), consistently shows up.<br /><br /><br />Leonardo DiCaprio (2006's "Blood Diamond") can do no wrong acting-wise, but his recent résumé is starting to look like the motion picture equivalent of "Meet the Press." It wouldn't hurt him to do something where he gets a chance to smile once in a while. DiCaprio plays Roger Ferris, a CIA operative who goes undercover in Jordan to capture Al-Saleem (Alon Aboutboul), a terrorist leader responsible for hundreds of bombing deaths. Instructed by boss Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe), Roger forms a rocky alliance with Hani Salaam (Mark Strong), the head of Jordanian covert operations, and narrows in on a Dubaian architect, Omar Sadiki (Ali Suliman), whom he falsely sets up as a Jihadist as a means of luring Al-Saleem out of hiding.<br /><br /><br />Based on the 2007 novel by David Ignatius, "Body of Lies" shares quite a number of similarities with the recent Don Cheadle thriller, "Traitor." This doesn't really come as a surprise, though, since the plot is so derivative. If one gets the sense while watching "Body of Lies" that he or she has seen it all before, it's because there isn't one original element in the screenplay by William Monaghan (2006's "The Departed"). The film's message, or point, is astoundingly juvenile-the Middle East is a screwed-up place-and Roger's moral quandary over putting an innocent man's life at risk for the sake of locating Al-Saleem is mostly treated as an afterthought.<br /><br /><br />A lack of engagement with the characters additionally puts a crimp in investing in the story. Roger Ferris isn't the warmest or most developed of protagonists-the only times he gets a chance to escape the business at hand is in his delicate romance with nurse Aisha (Golshifteh Farahani)-while Ed Hoffman is portrayed as an aloof figure going through the motions of being a dad and barely getting out of his robe long enough to leave his cozy lakeside house. Russell Crowe (2007's "American Gangster") gets his name above the title, but has so little to do one assumes he only took the job out of his faithfulness to director Ridley Scott. With a cell up to his ear for the bulk of his limited screentime, Crowe literally phones in his performance. He's so much better than this. In her first English-language role, Golshifteh Farahani lights up her scenes with a gentle, disarming sweetness as Aisha. Her subplot with Roger only merges with the central storyline near the end, but it is easily the most genuine and human portion of the film.<br /><br /><br />After ninety minutes of spinning its wheels, "Body of Lies" finally builds to some actual intrigue in the third act. With the stakes raised and multiple lives in danger, the movie picks up momentum and leads to a graphic torture sequence sure to have viewers wincing in their seats. And then, just like that, the cursory good will dissipates in a condescendingly convenient development that reminds of the misbegotten ending to Demi Moore's 1995 adaptation of "The Scarlet Letter." Granted, no Indians swoop in to save the day, but they might as well have. "Body of Lies" might deal in timely subject matter, but so many like-minded films have beat it to the punch that there's nothing new to offer audiences. Farahani features alongside DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in the film as "Aisha", a nurse who looks after DiCaprio's character.<br /><br />Farahani is well known in Iran and is the first Iranian-based actress to appear in a Hollywood movie since the Islamic Revolution took place in her homeland in 1979. She fears the political content of "Body of Lies" will anger some of the stricter bodies of government in Iran. Entertainment, Inc.<br /> <br />Someone cute is about to get hit with a phone.<br />Details:<br />Body of Lies<br />Directed by Ridley Scott<br />Warner Bros.<br />Opens October 10<br />A new kind of war movie for a new kind of war, Body of Lies is about the War on Terror as it is being waged on the ground, in the air, but most of all in cyberspace. Directed with terrific verve by Ridley Scott (coming after the listless American Gangster) from a smart screenplay by William Monahan (writer of The Departed), the movie follows the flow of strategic information from BlackBerrys to satellites to the 21st-century war rooms where all the world-seen from above on a wide-screen jumbotron-resembles one giant video game. Forget about nuclear launch codes and glass-encased detonators; here, Armageddon is just an e-mail-or a text message-away. Control-alt-delete: You're dead.<br /><br />Call it "terror porn" (as one colleague has amusingly dubbed the entire wave of recent Hollywood espionage movies) if you must. Like Syriana, The Kingdom, and Rendition, Body of Lies begins with a healthy dollop of post-9/11 relevance, as an Arab terrorist blows himself (and an entire block of Manchester, England) to smithereens just as the police move in to nab him. A bearded bin Laden surrogate-here a Syrian-born, American-educated guru named Al-Saleem (Israeli actor Alon Aboutboul)-soon steps forward to take credit and promises further attacks to "avenge the American wars on the Muslim world."<br /><br />Meanwhile, our man in Samarra, CIA operative Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio), sniffs for clues along Al-Saleem's bread-crumb trail. The terrorist and his followers have gone off the grid, we're told, conducting their meetings and transactions face to face rather than on the information superhighway-the better to avoid detection by the very technology that is the backbone of the American war machine. So Ferris devises a plan to lure Al-Saleem out of hiding that would seem preposterous were it not backed by the very military-industrial complex that has proved to rival Hollywood in matters of smoke-and-mirrors trickery. (Paging Jessica Lynch.) He invents a fictitious rival terror cell, equips it with fake bank accounts, plants allusive messages in all the right fundamentalist chat rooms, and dupes an innocent patsy-a Dubai architect (Ali Suliman) who meets all the requirements of "terror suspect" without actually being one-into an unwitting starring role in an act of mass destruction on American soil, produced and directed by the U.S. government.<br /><br />Body of Lies might best be described as a cat-and-mouse pursuit in which the felines and rodents spend more time chasing their own tails than stalking each other. (Think of the characters as the contemporary equivalents of the eternally feuding Napoleonic soldiers from Scott's 1977 debut feature, The Duellists.) For every one step forward Ferris takes on the ground in Iraq-and Syria, and Jordan-he ends up taking at least two steps back at the behest of his Langley superior, Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe), who thinks nothing of compromising Ferris's sources if he deems it in the interest of "national security." It becomes something of a running joke in the film that while the wiry, Arabic-speaking Ferris is getting his ankles nipped at by rabid dogs in an Amman alleyway and his skin embedded with shrapnel in a close-quarters explosion, the paunchy, Arkansas-accented Hoffman keeps tabs on everything from a comfortable remove, managing the operation from his cell phone while packing his kids off to school and engaging in other bits of emasculating domesticity. But its generic attributes (and title) notwithstanding, Scott's film may be the sharpest of all the post-9/11 thrillers-and also the most purely entertaining-in the way it maps the vectors and currents of the modern intelligence-gathering game without losing us in its dense narrative thicket. Even more refreshingly, Scott and Monahan don't feel obliged to keep up a p.c. balance of Arabs good and bad, Americans ideologically pure and bankrupt. And in Body of Lies' macrocosmic view, even a villain like Al-Saleem seems an ultimately minor player at the mercy of distant power brokers with very powerful remote controls.<br /><br />A long way from king of the world, DiCaprio here hides his adolescent face behind a scraggly, dark-brown beard and tries his best to sound grizzled, though his voice still quakes with the uncertainty of a high-school kid asking for a hall pass. Yet somehow that's all of a piece with the character, who seems to be one of those well-bred American youths who got into public service thinking he could actually make a difference, only to learn the hard way that war is a business and business is good. It is, along with Blood Diamond, the most confident performance DiCaprio has given in one of his ostensibly grown-up roles.<br /><br />But as good as DiCaprio is, Body of Lies is stolen early and often right out from under him by a British actor named Mark Strong, cast here as the debonair chief of the Jordanian General Intelligence Department. Tailored to the nines in Savile Row couture, calling everyone "my dear" in his mellifluous, dulcet tones, Strong's Hani Pasha supplies information when convenient, withholds when necessary, baits presumed allies into a trap when he smells a rat, and oversees the torture of the occasional prisoner, all without unsettling a hair on his elegantly coiffed head. "Never lie to me," he advises Ferris upon their first meeting, though it's quite clear that Hani doesn't risk trusting anyone. Which, in the world of Body of Lies, is the only sure way of keeping your head above water.<br /><br /><br/><br/>2 Vote(s) ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Roger Ferris (DiCaprio) is a CIA paramilitary operations officer. He is in Iraq trying to track down a terrorist called Al-Saleem. While following a lead, Ferris's asset (with whom he has become good friends) is killed during a car chase involving terrorists, rocket-propelled grenades and two missile-firing U.S. helicopters. Ferris recovers from his injuries at a U.S. facility in Qatar before he is sent to Jordan to run down some intelligence he recovered in Iraq. Meanwhile, unknown terrorists plan to follow up an offscreen series of bus bombings in Sheffield, with more attacks in Manchester but blow themselves up when the police find their cell.<br /><br />Ferris and his handler Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) are strongly contrasting characters: Ferris acts on the human scale, relying heavily on trust and human intelligence. Hoffman is more Machiavellian, and keeps tabs on Ferris via a Sikorsky Cypher UAV. Towards the start of the movie, Hoffman speaks to his CIA superiors. He explains to them how terrorists are turning their back on technology by throwing away their phones and computers and using old methods of communicating face-to-face and with written messages. This terrorist retreat into the stone age paradoxically makes the strengths Hoffman has to deploy worth less, and increases his dependence on Ferris and his human intelligence.<br /><br />In Jordan, Ferris tosses the ineffectual Station Chief out of his office before meeting Hani Salaam (Mark Strong), head of the Jordanian General Intelligence Department (GID). Salaam and Ferris form a fragile and complex bond. Salaam is deeply aware that whatever he thinks of Ferris, his duty is to his country, while Ferris acts for the CIA, whose interests cannot intersect with those of Jordan. Salaam demands one thing of Ferrisnever lie to him.<br /><br />Hoffman finds an Al-Saleem safehouse in Jordan and orders Ferris to conduct a surveillance operation on it covertly. Simultaneously, he organises another operative Skip (Vince Colosimo) to conduct an operation without Ferris' consent. Skip botches the operation, blowing his cover by divulging compromising information to a terrorist from the safehouse. As the terrorist takes off, running, and intent on releasing the information that the safehouse has been compromised, Ferris makes chase: bitten by dogs in the run, Ferris ultimately kills the runner. Hani covers up the killing by passing it off as a robbery and Ferris accuses Hoffman of running "side operations", telling Hoffman to lay off. Tending his wounds in hospital, Ferris meets a nurse named Aisha (Golshifteh Farahani). Around them, the swirl of terror animating the action continues as cell phone-triggered bombing in an Amsterdam flower market that kills at least 75 people.<br /><br />Having recognised one of the men living in the safehouse as well-known suspect Mustapha Karami (Kais Nashif), Hani takes Karami out into the desert and coerces him into working for Jordanian intelligence, threatening to set him up as a collaborator if he does not cooperate(he has been sending money to Karami's mother and making it appear as if it came from her reformed and successful son, so she doesn't know Karami is still a thief and now an aspiring Al Qaeda terrorist, and he is shamed and surprised when Hani does not kill him but lets him ride away on his bicycle). Hoffman asks Hani to hand Karami over to the CIA, most likely to interrogate him but Hani refuses, having earlier told Ferris he does not believe in torture. Unknown to Ferris and Hani, Hoffman tells Ferris' CIA subordinate to follow Karami and kidnap him. Karami gets away and notifies the terrorists in the safehouse that it is being watched, resulting in the safehouse being lit on fire and abandoned. Ferris's partner is caught and Hani professes his belief that Ferris had knowledge of the move on Karami and therefore blames his lack of honesty with Hani for the destruction of the safehouse. Hani gives Ferris 12 hours to leave Jordan.<br /><br />Ferris comes back to the States for a while and argues with Hoffman, whom he derides as power-hungry and fat. He then comes up with a plan to make contact with the terrorist Al-Saleem by staging a significant terrorist attack, the logic being that Al-Saleem will hear about this attack and try to make contact with the terrorist group who committed it. With the help of one of Hoffman's CIA friends, Ferris is able to frame a Jordanian architect named Omar Sadiki by posing as a financier contracting a bank's construction in the UAE, making him look like the head of a terrorist cell.<br /><br />The "terrorist attack" is staged at the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. A bomb is exploded in the base and Ferris uses unclaimed local bodies dressed as soldiers to make it seem that soldiers were killed in the attack. Al-Saleem (Alon Abutbul) sees the report of the attack on television and tries to make contact with Sadiki.<br /><br />Hani tells Ferris to come back to Jordan because he knows that he needs Ferris. Hani then talks to Ferris about his suspicions that Omar Sadiki is a terrorist. Ferris hides that this is not the case, and acts as if he doesn't know anything concerning Hani's suspicions. Ferris later tries to save Sadiki from being kidnapped by Al-Saleem's henchmen but fails and sees another CIA agent nearly killed in the subsequent car crash. Sadiki informs Al-Saleem that Ferris made it seem he committed the terrorist attack. Sadiki is killed. Ferris goes back to his apartment and finds out that Aisha, in whom Ferris is romantically interested, has been kidnapped. He then desperately asks Hani for his help, explaining to Hani that he made up Omar Sadiki's terrorist cell and the terrorist attack supposedly committed by Sadiki was faked. However, Hani refuses to help Ferris because Ferris lied to him.<br /><br />Ferris gets a call from the kidnappers and is told to wait for a van. The van picks him up and drops him in the desert. Meanwhile back in CIA headquarters, Hoffman is watching everything via an unmanned aerial vehicle. Ferris is then picked up by a group of men in SUVs and the vehicles create a massive cloud of dust before splitting up. Hoffman is unable to follow Ferris because he has no idea which car he is in.<br /><br />Ferris is taken to be interrogated by Al-Saleem, just across the border in Syria. When Ferris asks Al-Saleem about Aisha, Al-Saleem tells Ferris that someone has lied to him and he has been double-crossed. Ferris tells Al-Saleem that there is an infiltrator (Karami) in his organization who works for Ferris, and that, by association, Al-Saleem works for Ferris. Al-Saleem smashes two of Ferris' fingers with a hammer before turning on a video camera and ordering Ferris to be killed. Al-Saleem then leaves. Ferris is prepared by Al-Saleem's men to be executed on video. As Ferris is about to be executed, Hani and his team of Jordanian SF burst into the room, killing all of the terrorists. Al-Saleem is seen leaving the building and unwittingly getting into a car driven by Hani's men who arrest him.<br /><br />While in the hospital, Ferris is visited by Hani who reveals to him that it was his men who kidnapped Aisha, using blood she donated regularly at work to make it appear she'd been killed or wounded. He then brokered a deal with Al-Saleem (using Karami): he would deliver CIA agent Ferris to him for money. It was one of Hani's men who rang Ferris and dropped him in the desert. Since Karami was Hani's man inside Al-Saleem's organization, he was able to locate Ferris and Al-Saleem in time to save Ferris and arrest Al-Saleem. Aisha has been released unharmed but does not know what role her kidnapping played.<br /><br />In the end Hoffman offers Ferris a job in his office, but Ferris declines and tells Hoffman that he is quitting the CIA. Hoffman prepares to leave Jordan and resigns himself to Ferris not changing his mind. At the movie's end, Ferris seemingly decides to not contact Aisha therein refuting what Hoffman had repeated numerous times through the movie: no one is innocent. Hoffman is shown speaking with CIA operatives watching Ferris in the market buying pastries, in a box similar to that which he had taken to Aisha's. Hoffman declares that Ferris is no longer an asset.
